The Business Blunders Series

Welcome everyone. We are well into expanding The Business Blunders Series to include stories from different professions and business sectors.

If there are any topics you would like to address in our blog, or you have a story you want to tell, drop me a line or post below.

Dan (AKA Isaac The Beancounter)

The Business Blunders Series is a management and leadership information exchange utilizing fictitious characters to tell anecdotal business stories which are based on real events experienced by the author and contributors.

The purpose of these stories include: first, they teach how business problems unfold in the real
world; second they portray bizarre situations readers can learn from; and finally, the stories are fun!

The series is based on the main character Isaac who retires after twenty years in the accounting profession then moving to a Caribbean island becoming a bartender next to a resort. In his establishment, Isaac meets many guests from various occupations where they share tales, each addressing a business problem or concept, are tied to an event occurring on the island, and are entertaining. But these stories are not just about accounting... we get into contracting and procurement, human resources, operations, business continuity planning, and general management and leadership.

In the first story of the series several university students visit the island including three accounting majors; during the week the students share their island adventures where Isaac spins the events into fun yet educational business narratives. The sequels will cover various occupations and industries.

To be clear, Isaac is not just an accountant; he also served as a military aircraft mechanic, a volunteer emergency services worker, and combined his training and experience managing vocational training programs in the federal penitentiary service. From these experiences, he alone has many tales to tell!

Thank you for participating in the adventures, and I hope you find the series both informative and entertaining.

As it appears over the trees, it stops and hovers to evaluate the patient and her location. “We won’t be able to land here, but there is a clearing a hundred meters up the trail.” The pilot advises the crew they will have to land further up, and the rescuers will have to walk down the trail and get Melissa. “Well fancy meeting you here young lady!” “Isaac! What are you doing here?” “I told you I was a man of many talents?” Isaac decided to keep up his volunteer service, and joined the local rescue team “Always serving my community, that’s what accountants do!” Mellissa is placed into a stretcher with a big wheel on the bottom, and the rescue crew, along with the help of Jake and the other tourists, wheel Melissa up the trail toward the awaiting helicopter. “How did you guys get here so quick Isaac?” “It’s called contingency planning Melissa; you anticipate the probability and potential impact of a certai...

Just in Time

Just in Time   “Just put the juice on the table, and please bring the liquor over here Juan.” “Sí señor.” Isaac has come in early, because this is the day he receives his inventory. “You didn’t have Gin on your list Mr. Isaac, I brought some just in case.” “That’s fine Juan, I will use it eventually.” The two men finish unloading the supplies, then Juan heads for the door. “Hasta luego Señor Isaac.”   During the past two years, Isaac has been able to get a fairly good idea of what sells, and how often. He also knows that some products are often backordered depending on the season, so he makes sure he adjusts his ordering accordingly, and allows enough lead time. If he wants to compete with the other bars, he certainly cannot be running out of product.   “Good Morning Isaac!” “Carter! I’m surprised to see you up so early. Where are the others?” Isaac does not normally see Carter until much later in the day, and always with his friends. “I had to take it easy last night...
