Get a Team!

‘ It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.’ (Harry S. Truman)

There is a concept called ‘Synergy’ which is defined as ‘a sum that is greater than the whole of its parts.’ If eight people each tried to pick up a boulder, individually they will fail... if they do it together, they will succeed. We can apply this concept to almost every aspect of our life and business.

‘None of us is as smart as all of us.’ (Kenneth H. Blanchard)

Multi disciplinary teams are the key to an organization ́s success and working together is paramount. Engineers design it, Fabricators build it, Marketers sell it, Mechanics maintain it, and Administrators keep us on track. Each of these people are links to a chain, and collectively they accomplish your goals. The key to all of this is to bring everyone and their skills together and have them work in unison to accomplish their common goal.

How do we facilitate Teamwork?

The first step is to ensure there is a clear and concise common goal, and that all parties understand and agree to that goal.

The second step is to ensure everyone understands their role, their counterparts’ roles, how they rely on each other and what the effect is of a break in the chain.

The third step is to ensure the team members work together.

Working together versus against each other is paramount to integrating multi disciplinary teams.

An important factor to consider is people are not all the same, and although a generalization, persons with certain character traits often migrate to certain professions. As an example, Accountants and Marketers will almost always, with a few exceptions, have different personalities. There are many different programs and associated workshops available to assist with identifying and illustrating different personality traits, and I encourage organizations to research and consider such workshops for their teams.

Other team building events to consider include: sports tournaments, family days, scavenger hunts, cook-offs, and improv workshops. Write to us at forwardlookingsolutions@gmail.com for your complimentary fun team building exercise.

To this point we have focused on multi disciplinary teams versus a single disciplinary team; however, what we have discussed can certainly apply to both.

Accountant by day... Superhero by night!

“Here it comes now!” Fourty minutes later, a helicopter is heard approaching. As it appears over the trees, it stops and hovers to evaluate the patient and her location. “We won’t be able to land here, but there is a clearing a hundred meters up the trail.” The pilot advises the crew they will have to land further up, and the rescuers will have to walk down the trail and get Melissa. “Well fancy meeting you here young lady!” “Isaac! What are you doing here?” “I told you I was a man of many talents?” Isaac decided to keep up his volunteer service, and joined the local rescue team “Always serving my community, that’s what accountants do!” Mellissa is placed into a stretcher with a big wheel on the bottom, and the rescue crew, along with the help of Jake and the other tourists, wheel Melissa up the trail toward the awaiting helicopter. “How did you guys get here so quick Isaac?” “It’s called contingency planning Melissa; you anticipate the probability and potential impact of a certai...

Just in Time

Just in Time   “Just put the juice on the table, and please bring the liquor over here Juan.” “Sí señor.” Isaac has come in early, because this is the day he receives his inventory. “You didn’t have Gin on your list Mr. Isaac, I brought some just in case.” “That’s fine Juan, I will use it eventually.” The two men finish unloading the supplies, then Juan heads for the door. “Hasta luego Señor Isaac.”   During the past two years, Isaac has been able to get a fairly good idea of what sells, and how often. He also knows that some products are often backordered depending on the season, so he makes sure he adjusts his ordering accordingly, and allows enough lead time. If he wants to compete with the other bars, he certainly cannot be running out of product.   “Good Morning Isaac!” “Carter! I’m surprised to see you up so early. Where are the others?” Isaac does not normally see Carter until much later in the day, and always with his friends. “I had to take it easy last night...
