“Contingency Plans come in many types; these include having back-up power so that your plant can continue functioning during a power outage, auxiliary power units and nightly back-ups of computers, insurance polices, and alternate locations for operating your business after a fire or flood.” “Yes, they talk about Business Continuity Plans in school.” “That’s correct Melissa, and these plans can be relatively simple, or quite complex, depending on the organization, and its needs.” “Like a rescue?” “Absolutely, your guides carry personal locators, we have an arrangement with the helicopter company including training with them, and we have a quick and efficient system for mustering our volunteers.” “Thanks Isaac.” “Speaking of contingencies, did you buy travel medical insurance Melissa.” “Of course Isaac, I’m an accountant.”
“I remember a time many years ago, it was 1999, and the world was in a panic over the year turning to 2000.” “Why was that a problem?” Isaac laughs. “The world was in chaos! They thought all computers would crash, including grocery stores, banks, utility companies, communications systems, and even cars!” “Cars. Why?” “Because the small computers that run the fuel injection and spark systems would fail.” “Wow.” “Oh yes Melissa, people were building under-ground shelters, taking money out of the bank, stocking up on food and fuel.” “Carter would stock up on Booze.” “Everyone was buying generators for their homes.” “Were they expecting an apocalypse?” “Yes in fact; many people thought we were heading for the fall of civilization!” “That’s extreme?” “You have no idea. I remember dairy operations running 24/7 to make pallets of bagged water, and people buying every can of soup and beans on the shelf.” “I was six Isaac, and I remember that new-years eve was a big party.” “I had friends who were in the IT business Melissa; the biggest party of the century, and they had to sit at their work station and stare at the screen.”
“Then there was this one guy I know, Jeff. He had a neighbour named Al that was freaking out. He would come over every day for the months leading to December 31st; do you have water, do you have food, do you have fuel, do you have medicine.” “Conspirests are Us?” “Oh yeah, it got to the point Jeff had to blacken out the windows of his garage, because every time he went out to it and turned on the light, Al would show up...and wouldn’t leave.” “So, what did he do?” “Well Melissa, that is the funny part. One night, Mr. Doom showed up at Jeff’s house, and found him sitting in a camping chair drinking a bottle of rum, and smoking a cigar.” “Oh good.” “Al sat down beside Jeff, and told him that he had bought the last generator in town, and asked Jeff if he had a chance to get one.” “And.” “Well Jeff was quit calm; he took a sip from his bottle, handed it over to Al, and then politely informed him of his plan.”
Coming soon! ‘The Beancounter.’ And that is where you will hear the rest of the story!
